HUNTING ADVICE The ringneck pheasant (the most common species in South Dakota) is not native to North America. The bird species originates in China and it's believed that the state was stocked with the birds in the early 1900s. However, historical records are sketchy so there is no strong indication where the South Dakota population originated. What makes South Dakota's pheasant hunting so great is the abundance of habitat in the state. Pheasants essentially need these things to survive and thrive: abundance of food (waste grains and grasses), protective covers for breeding and cover for winter survival. All of this can be found in South Dakota. When hunting for pheasants, a sportsman should keep in mind that the birds have an acute sense of hearing and are easily spooked. Especially on dry, calm days, birds will tend to flee at the sound of a car door slamming or the loading a shotgun chamber. Pheasants also have keen eyesight and are wary of anything that look unfamiliar in their habitat. Many hunters have found that a slow zigzag walk through a field is a great way to avoid spooking birds in heavy cover. Early mornings, over-cast rainy days or just before a winter storm are ideal hunting conditions. During these times, the birds tend to stay longer in the comfort of their cover. Autumn in South Dakota can be unpredictable. Temperatures can range from the 80s to the 30s. Hunters who are booking their trips in the early fall (Labor Day- Mid October) will be comfortable in jackets, jeans, flannel shirts and boots. However, a heavier jacket is always recommended for those unpredictable conditions. For late October and November hunts, winter clothing is recommended.
